THE WAR TAX
SMALL INCREASE IN BEER DUTY.." MINERAL OIL DUTY LIKELY TO STAND. [Fhom Ora ParltaMentaby Repobtmi.] WELLINGTON, September 13. The Government intend to introduce their taxing Bills towards the end of this week, as it is expected that the passing of the Estimates.'.will not be a protracted business. It is generally anticipated that, notwithstanding the Treasurer's statement in his reply to the Budget. Debate, that the taxation proposals would stand, an alteration will be- made in the taxing Bills. The readjustment -will bo very slight, however, and is likely to take the form of increasing the War' Tax on beer to the extent of another £IO,OOO or £20,000, which would not, it is stated, dismay" the brewers or cause them to pass the charge on to the consumer. It appears certain that if any increase is made in the beer tax it will not be as heavy as was advocated during the Budget Debate. It is still very doubtful whether the War Tax on mineral oils will be withdrawn. There is a marked difference of opinion on the question, and it would not be at all surprising if the Government refuse to alter the impost
