NOTES OX THE RAGING. [Special to tecs *Stah.'3 CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. Countess Tolstoi registered her onlywin last season in the Winclimoro Welter Handicap at Ashburton in May, and she opened her winning account of the present season by placing to her credit the Coldstream Welter Handicap to-day. She ran both the races mentioned in the same manner, going to the front ,at the start and leading all the way, and ofr*each occasion she was ridden by the North Island light-weight. W. Bell. The Ashburton course maintained its reputation as one of the fastest in. the Dominion, and some smart times were registered there this week.- On the first day Snub ran the seven furlongs in the Braemar Welter in lmin 27sec, and yesterday, in the Fairfield Hack Handicap, Multoo cut_ out the six furlongs in Imm 13gsec, while in the Farewell Handicap First Glance, with 9.9, ran the same distance in lmin 13^sec. First Glance, who has not raced since the Ashburton meeting in May last, made her reappearance on the track to-day, when she won the Farewell Handicap in first-class style. Mr G. B. Starkey's imported English filly Week End made a successful debut at Ashburton to-day in the Maiden Hack Race, for which she was inade a very hot favorite. M. M'Kay, tho rider of Master. Hamilton in the second Hurdle' Handicap at Ashburton to-day, was called before the stewards after that race, and fined £1 for" looking back, and "also cautioned for crossing. After the Coldstream Welter Handicap at Ashbarton to-day an inquiry was held in to the 'running of Giralda, the explanation given by tho rider being accepted. Master Hamilton, who had \von the Hack Welter Handicap the previous day, made his debut as a hurdler at Ashburton, when he won the second Hurdle Handicap in good style. He proved himself a bold jumper, and leading practically all the way, had little difficulty in stalling off Silver Shield's challenge in the straight. Commotion, the winner of the Hurdle Handicap on the first day, pulled np very lame. The- Winchmore Trot at Ashburton today was responsible for a very smart performance on the part of Phingari, who,

handicapped to do &30, cut out the mile ' in 2.18. Phingari, who was bred by her owner, Mr J. Faifell, is a full sister to Dan Patch, St.-Kevin, Glendalough, and ' Innisfail.' Wild Elm, who finished second to Phingari yesterday, also improved very considerably on her handicap time, and was unlucky in striking such an improved pacer as the winner.

Won. Lost. Drawn. Poverty Buy ... 4 0 0 Wellington' ... 3 0 1 Wairarapa ... 3 1 1 Manawatu ... 2 1 2 ' Canterbury ... 2 4 0 Ka-vrke's Bay ... 1 4 0 Wanganui ... 0 5 0
