RIVERINA DISABLED
ENGINE BREAKS DOWN.
[Per United Puess Association.]
CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. Advice wa3 received at Lyttelton at 10.45 p.m. yesterday that the Huddart-Parker Company's steamer Riverina, which left port earlier in the evening for Wellington, had broken down about 25 miles off Adderley Head. The tug Lyttelton was despatched at 11.45 p.m. to tow her back to port. The Riverina was picked up by the tug about 3 o clock this morning, when the former vessel was steaming slowly back to port. The tug kept beside her for some time, and subsequently a line was passed aboard the Riverina, which completed the voyage back to the' stream, where she was anchored about 6.30, with the assistance of the tug. A number of engineers went out to the disabled steamer this morning, and as soon as repairs can be effected she will continue her voyage northward. The Riverina is usually engaged in the Sydney-Auckland service, ard was brought into the East Coast running this trip in order to relieve the Victoria, which has gone across tq Australia for overhaul. Messrs Kinsey and Go. (aCants for the Riverina) state that the mishap was du« to the intermediate slide spindle breaking at 9 o'clock last night, when the vessel was 21 miles from Adderlev Head. Temporary repairs were effected by the ship's engineers, but it was deemed advisable to return to port in order that repairs of a more permanent nature could be effected. _ The agents anticipate that the vessel will not be able to continue • her voyage north until late this evening.
