Leaving Calcutta for Wellington via Samarang, Bunbury, Hobart, Bluff, and other southern ports on July 30, the Union Company’s • Waitorao has "2,200 tons of cargo on board for that port. The Kini leaves to-day for Auckland via ports. The Poherua is loading at Westport for Dunedin. The Mokoia arrived at Hobart yesterday from New Zealand ports, and leaves to-day for Melbourne. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Maori, from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.30 a.m. to-day, and connected with the first express for the south. SHIPPING LEGISLATION. AMENDMENTS DESIRED. WELLINGTON, August 25. A deputation from the New Zealand Executive Council of the Federated Seamen’s Union of Australasia waited on the Hon. Dr E. M‘Nab in Wellington yesterday to urge important amendments to the shipping laws, including an amendment of the constitution to enable Parliament to have power to enact their own shipping legislation without consulting the Imperial authorities; also the repeal of section 57 of the Shipping Act Amendment Act, which empowers the Minister to repeal the Act. The Minister replied that, speaking on the points as a whole, he considered they were very reasonable, and he was in favor of many of them. He did not know whether tne Government intended to bring down any legislation beyond that pertaining to the war, hut if so he believed he would be able to carry out some of the proposals by legislation this session.
