FATAL ACCIDENT IN RUBBER FACTORY. SYDNEY, August 24. In the Perdrian Rubber Works a vulcaniter exploded, and set fire to a quantity of methylated spirit. Hie contents of the room, in which six girls and a man were working, were destroyed. August 25. (Received August 25, at 9.35 a.m.) One of the girls injured by the explosion has since died. It appears that work was proceeding as usual, when tlie vnlcaniser exploded, driving the cylinder across the room and taking off a girl’s ear. The roof was blown off, and one wall fell in. The fire was soon extinguished. COLLIERS" BIG DEMAND. SYDNEY, August 24. The Colliery Employees’ Federation have notified the Northern District mjneowners of a demand for 20 per cent, advance on tonnage rates, and 26 per cent, on all other employees paid a. daily wage. The association ask for a reply h'y August 31. SHORTER HOURS : MORE DRUNKENNESS. MELBOURNE, August 25. (Received August 25, at 8.15 a.m.) Rplice court records show that since the early closing (9.30 p.m.) of hotels the number of cases of drunkenness is 195 in excess of the number for th© same period last year.
