Bates) supplied the following at noon to-day :—Strong southerly winds; squally, with heavy showers: colder weather; glass rising; tides good; sea, considerable off shore. SAlLED.—January 22. Wartaka, s.s. (5 p.m.), 2,422 tons, Flynn. for the Bluff. The Flora sails on Monday for Westport- via way ports. The Poherua sailed to-day for the Bluff. After returning to Dunedin with i cargo of cheeso for shipment Home oy the Wahnana she will proceed to the West Coast. The Mimiro, from New York via Cape Town, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, arrived at Auckland on Wednesday. She Is due at Dunedin on January 31 for jnal discharge. The Ardgarry, from New York via aorthern New Zealand ports, is due at Dunedin to-morrow for discharge. Commencing with the Makura on February 23, the Canadian and Australasian jteamers will be despatched from Auckland for Suva, Honolulu, and Vancouver at 10 a.m. instead of at noon, as at present. The Wanaka sailed yesterday afternoon for Bluff and Auckland via, coastal ports. The C*. and D. liner Niwani arrived in 'Wellington on Tuesday from Sydney for Homeward loading. " After visiting various ports she will complete loading at Bluff, sailing finally front that port about the first week in February. Some changes in the purser staffs of the various Union boats are announced. Mr H. Neil, of the Paloona, is to sign off that vessel on Monday, and will join th» Moana on Saturday*. Mr T. B. Walker, of the Moana, is to transfer to the Atua, joining the latter vessel at Auckland on rhe 4th of next month, and Mr C. E._Leighton, of the Wahine. will fill Mr Neil's place on the Paloona. Mr T.eiErhton hcihs; succeeded "bv Mr V.' Benstead. of the Arahura. Mr R. T. Carlyon. of the Poherua, is to go on the Arahura. Cable advices received in Sydney on the 9th inst. stated that the Norwegian ship Songvand. which was long overdue at Portland, Oregon, from Rockhampton (Queensland), had arrived, at her destination after an extraordinarily long passage of 152 day?. This passage is one of the longest ever made from Australia to the Pacific Coast, and is in keeping with :he ship, which was never known as a flipper, even when she was under the British flag, and then named Cressingtrm. It is reported that there is a prospect ■ f the amalgamation of the Coast- Steamships Company with the Adelaide Steamship Company. They have for more than a year been in keen competition for the , oast trade of the State, and apparently the shareholders of the smaller company ire satisfied with the proposals for amalgamation which have been placed before .'hem. The question was considered at a meeting, when it was informally .de- : h.led to accept the Adelaide Company's scheme for amalgamation on the basis of £65,000 iu Adelaide Steamship Company's shares and £5.000 in • M-h. with the management of the Coast Steamships to remain as at present in the hands of tho present secretary (Mr A. I." Messurier) for a period of five \ ears. Early in the, new year a legal meeting of shareholders of the company will be called to ratify the proposal. THE VICTORIA. Owing ;o yesterday being Anniversary Pay at, Wellington the Victoria remained it till this morning, when she Bailed, for Dunedin direct, omitting her usual call at Lyttelton. She is due- here to-morrow, and" sails on Tnesdav on the return trip to Auckland and East Coast ports, and connects with the Riverina for Sydney. ADMIRALTY TRANSPORTS. Tt would seem that tho rates of remuneration paid by the Admiralty for requisitioned tonnage will be lower' than wn- originally anticipated (says the 'Sydney shipping List '), and' bU* than the figure? suggested by the committee of steamship owners, which some little time back discussed the .matter with the Director of Transports. At the same time, the rates proposed for passenger liners and cargo liners of various sizes and «nprd are not by any means unfair. They appear to be based on about an average market value over tho past foijr months" The bulk of the steamers requisitioned were_ of the. first class cargo type, and the idea of rate officially suggested for the?» is as follows : Rates per Speed. The figures run from 16s 6d for 15-knofc boats to 25s for 25knot steamers, each type oi' ship needing to be specially considered. With the main principles of a scale of remuneration thus laid down, the work of arranging a settlement of hire for nil transports engaged hy the Government should now be got through speedily.
THE FERRY SERVICE. The Wahine. from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.30 this morning, and connected with tho first express for the south. WIRELESS TO WARN VESSELS. Tn view of the outcrv n.caint-t the proposal to establish wireless signalling apparatus at the, Throo King;;, tlie followmg paragraph from the Sydney ' Shipping News' will ho read by local master mariners :—" To warn vessels of approaching danger in fogs_ is the object of .1 wireless apparatus which the Australian Government are having erected on tho Victorian coast. _ The equipment will have a radius of 15 miles. As soon as a vessel fitted with wireless comes inside this sphere its equipment will receivo the automatic signals informing it that it is getting into shoal waters. The present signal method is rocket firing, but it depends largely upon prevailing winds whether tho sounds can he heard at any useful distance." WHAT OUR NAVY HAS DONE. The British Board of Trad* 1 !;:■ ••' -■ sued a table showing the relative of British and German shipping after 16 weeks of war. Incidentally it shows how effective has been the silent pressure of our Navy on Germany's mercantile marine. The total number of British steamships over 100 tons gross is given at 10,123. with a gross tonnage of 20 i millions. The corresponding figures t"c Germany are 2,090 and five millions. The losses to British shipping are as follow : Captured 49, detained "in German ports 75, held up in ISaltic and Black Sea 71. Total 195, or 1.9 per cent, of the total number. The losses to German shipping are :—Captured 80. detained in British or Allied ports 166, seeking in neutral ports 646, in German ports 329. Total, 1.221, or 58.4 per cent, of Hie total number. The net result is that close upon 10,000 British ships are sailing the seas, whilo of the available German ships 10 are known to he at sea, while 125 ships over 500 tons, 353 steam trawlers, and a number of small coasters are not accounted for. PORT OF SYDNEY. The Sydney shipping master (Captain W. H. Mason) has recently completed h:s shipping statistics for the port of Svdney for the year ended December 31. The figures are* interesting, inasmuch as they .show that had it not been for the. extraordinary conditions prevailing a substantial increase would have resulted. Despite these adverse circumstance.*, however, the returns are satisfactory. The number of seamen whose engagements have been registered was 33.039, as against 51,054 in 1913, an increnso of 1.985. Discharges total 33,079, an increase of 1,102 on 1913. The number of seamen reported as deserted from British ships trading in foreign waters show* n. decrease "f 100 on the previous year's figures. The amount of wages paid to seamen through the Government shipping office was £128,816 Is 4d, which, when compared with 1913 (£138,826 12s lid), shows a decrease of £9,010 lis 7d: and the number of licenses to shins issued to seamen was 2,588. as against 1,855 in 1913. an increase of 733. The second return is of foreign-going and inter-State vessels (exclusive of ships of war and vessels trading coastwise), as shown by the registers in the Government shipping office, giving the number of seamen arriving at the port of Sydimv during the year ending December 31, 1914.
