Portugal, in spito of the fact that its prosperity has been rapidly increasing of late years, is badly in debt. Its national debt lias increased from £20,000,000 to £170,000,000 in 50 years, the interest on its loans being over £5,000,000, by a long way the heaviest item in tho national expenditure.
For obtaining a suit of clothes by falsely representing that he v.'as a survivor of the ill-fated cruiser Crcssy, Frederick Beale, of Cowes, was sentenced to a. month's hard labor at Newport (Isle of Wight).
