The Kurow left Westport this morning for Timaru, Oamaru, and Dunedin. The Kotsre is due on Monday morning From Riverton, and will sail the following day for the south. The Waitemata left Wellington to-day for Auckland and Sydney en route for Vancouver and San Francisco.

The new- yard at Irvine has secured a contract for two merchant vessels, each of about 0.000 tons, for British owners, and a Paisley firm has been commissioned to build a twin-somv suction dredger for the Wanganui Harbor Board, New- Zealand. Of the 13 vessels, 10 maj bp classed as up-to-date tramps, ranging from 4.000 to 8.000 tons. Five are'for Glsgmv firms, and the other five, it is understood, are for English owners.’

Huge seas seemed to rise, perpendicularly, and caino crashing down on the decks with such great force that ail hands thought the vessel would founder. Fortunately, she came through the ordeal without sustaining any serious damage, and, being favored by fair winds, made the trip in 16 days 'from port to port, which is believed to be a record for a deeply-laden sailing l oraft. LLOYD'S ANNUAL REPORT. A RECORD YEAR. The annual report of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for 1913-14 is exceptionally interesting. It shows that at the close of the year, on June 30, 1914, 10,621 merchant vessels, registering 23,870,665 tons gross, held classes assigned by the committee of Lloyd's Register. During the year the committee assigned classes to 713 new vessels. Their registered gross tonnage, amounting to 2,020,185 tons, was the 'highest total for any or.o year recorded in tile history of the society. Of the 713 now vessels, 664 were steamers of 3,014.397 tons, and 49 were sailing vessels of 5,788 tons. Of the total, 1,204,111 tons, or about 60 per cent,, wore built for the ' British Empire (United Kingdom 1,164,519 tons, colonies 39,592 tons), and 816,074 tons, or about 40 per cent., for other countries.

The tonnage classed by the society during the year includes 72 vessels of 429,384 tons built upon tho Isherwood system of longitudinal framing. Up to date there have been built, or in course of construction to the society's classification, 226 of these vessels, totalling 1,182,200 tons gross. The .number of vessels intended to carry oil in bulk which have been classed 'by the society during the year under review is the largest ybt recorded in any one year —namely, 72 vessels, _of 402.035 tons, five of these vessels being over 10.000 gross tons each. There are 642 yachts of 111,378 tons classed in the society's register of yachts. Of these, 297 of 98,945 tons are steam vessels, and 297 of 7,131 tons are sailing vessels, while 66 of 5,304 ions are .fitted with internal combustion engines. .During the year. 1.215,467 tons. of ship and _ boiler steel were tested by the society’s surveyors at Home and abroad. At the end of Juno, there wore 85 steel manufacturing firms iu tho United Kingdom._and 21 f abroad, recognised by the committee for tho production of steel for use in the construction of vessels and machinery intended for classification in Lloyd a Register. The total length of chain cabletested during tho year at the Public Proving Houses m the' United Kingdom, all of which are under the superintendence of tho society, was 406,131 tat horns, in addition to a- largo quantity of miscellaneous chains, samples, etc. The number of anchors tested was 9,234.
