NEW YEAR MIX-UP. CASUALTY AND CONSEQUENCES. A SAVAGE SCUFFLE. As the tale, goes, the Maoris of the kainga at. Moeraki plotted to get some Ivor at New Year. Since the kainga- is a prohibited area their own names and addresses would bring no remits, and it is alleged that a Main named Patrick Hampwrote- the name of a fisherman (OLas. Hc-.itky) to a money telegram for £1 1.45, and an order for 18 gallons of beer, to be sent to Hillgrove station on December 31. The beer arrived, and it is alleged that Heat ley (in whose name_ it was procured) lifted the goods, which were carried to the border of th ekainga. and left in a shod. Till midnight a. sort of festival seems to have been held here, and thereafter (it is alleged) ths> remaining liquor was carried to Paum Porete's house, where the carnival was continued.
Between 2 and 3 a.m. on January 1 harmony scorns to have been interrupted by a quarrel between Torek: and a. three-quarter ,-asto Maori named Reynolds, and the, two went outside to fight. A. special sitting <>f the- Court will be held at Hampden on the. 22nd inst. to hear 'these charges, and also others under the Licencing Act. arising therefrom.
