. The High Commissioner reported under date LONDON, December 22 (10.40 a.m.), Paris reports that the enemy executed yesterday violent counter-attacks to the north-west of Puisa-Liena. All were repulsed. December 23 (7.20 a.m.). Petrograd reports that in the Caucasus in the direction of Lake Van. on Sunday the Turks were defeated with heavy losses. The Russians pursued and captured a mountain gun and ammunition. A few unimportant engagements occurred in tho direction of Sqvykainysclu
December 23 (6.5 p.m.). Petrograd reports that in East Prussia the Germans wore repulsed on' the line Neidcnberg-Soldau-Laurenteberg. LOYAL LUTHERANS. MELBOURNE, December 24. The President of the Evangelist Lutheran Synod of Australia has written to Mr Fisher assuring him of the true loyalty of the clergy,.and congregation of the Synod, deplorng the racial feelings which have been stirred up, and requesting the Federal Government to protect the right which by their naturalisation was granted them as British subjects. DONATIONS BY CHINESE. Mr Joe Tye undertook to collect from his countrymen—Chinese in and around Dunedin —funds for the Patriotic Association, and ho has handed in to the secretary the sum of £23 Is, half of which it is desired should bo placed to the credit of the Belgian relief fund and half to the British.
