Regarding the war contribution. of £2,000,000 demanded from Brussels, tho Berlia ' Lokalanzeiger' eays that M. Max, tie Burgomaster, paid first of all £BOO,OOO, of which £140,000 was paid in cash. For the remainder he issued bonds, which ho later refused to redeem. The remainder (£1,200,000) he refused to acknowledge at all. This attitude was the reason for hU arrest and transportation to a German fortress.
