A tribute to tho Purakanni pioneers was paid by Mr George Neale yesterday evening at the ■ quarterly meeting of the Port Chalmers Old Identities’ Association.
“Lot. me pay,” said Mr Xoale. “a. tribute to the splendid pluck of other early settlors at Purakanni. There wero our Hornes, Dobinsons, Andrews, Mawsons, Footes, M'Lachlans, and others, whom I have seen carrying their eggs, butter, etc., on their backs to market, with no roads, and in some places only a tree across the creeks. And on the return journey similarly carrying their Hour, oatmeal, ami other groceries; aye, and parts of iron chimneys and window sashes. Talk about brave men and women—theirs was heroism indeed! They were pioneers,”
