Tho Victoria sailed to-day far Auckland Mjd East Coast ports to connect with the Riverina for Sydney. The Poherua, from (Ireymouth, was duo at Timaru to-day. She is duo at Dunedin to-morrow. The Wimmera is due to-morrow from
Lyttelton, and sails on Thursday for Bluff, Hobart, and Melbourne. The Wanaka was expected to leave (Wellington this afternoon for Timaru, where she loads produce for Auckland. The Moeraki was duo at Wellington at 11 o’clock this morning from Sydney. • Tho Kamona sailed last evening for Bluff, 'Westport, and Wellington. The Kowhai leaves Greymouth to-day for Timaru, Camara, and Dunedin. , The Corinna leaves Wellington to-mor-row morning for Dunedin. She leaves here on Saturday for Timaru, Wellington, Nelson, and Now Plymouth. The Kotare will be laid up this week, , jmd will resume running to southern ports Early next week. , The four-masted schooners Winslow and , John B. Campbell are now due at Dun- . pdin with cargoes of timber from the • Pacific Coast. Mr Darroch, chief officer of the Ulimaroa, is being transferred to a similar ' position on the Zealandia, and his place ’ js being filled by Mr R. .Jones, of tho Victoria, and Mr Bracken transfers from ’ the Westralia to tho Victoria. Captain Carson took command of the Monowni yesterday, relieving Captain Manning, who transfers to the Maori, which avail resume her running in tho ferry service shortly. Mr Nicholas, chief officer of the Wa- ; hine, transferred to the Pateena at Wei- | lington yesterday, and Mr Chadwick filled the vacancy on tho Wahiue. A four-masted schooner—believed to bo the schooner Winslow, timber laden from Columbia River —was sighted off the Heads on Sunday evening, and yesterday morning the tug was despatched to tow , her into port, but shortly after leaving port the tug was recalled, as tho vessel • proved to be tho William Bowden, bound for Bluff from Timaru. ; The Marine Department have ordered a magisterial inquiry to be held at Napier regarding the recent .stranding of the steamer Koutunui while coming down -the j East Coast. On tho 6th nit. the vessel ! ' ran on some rocks off Crete Point, Bay 1 of Plenty, but was subsequently refloated. Information received in Sydney states 1 that there is a largo quantity of cargo . offering at San Francisco and Vancouver for Australia and New Zealand, and • apart from the steamer Wyandotte a number of steamers of the Strath Lino have been fixed to assist. The Stratheam was due to leave San Francisco on November IS for Vancouver. She will be followed by the Strathallan and Strathall. The White Star Lino have been awarded , , a diploma for Grand Prize in connection ’ with its exhibit at the Anglo-American Exposition, Shepherd’s Bush, London. This consisted of models of the first Britannic, 5,000 tons, built in 1874. and tho new Britannic, 50.000 tons, now under construction, and expected, to start on her maiden voyage to New York in tho spring of 19151 There is an element of humor about a jnessagg._ which .states that 36 German Chips, with an aggregate tonnage of over 100,000 tons, have been held up at Antwerp since the beginning of the war. Tho explanation of this distressing state of affairs (says 1 Syren and Shipping ’) is that Germany, being convinced that Belflum would remain neutral, gave, no overs for these ships to proceed to other ports. This ought to amuse the Kaisei'. The first casualty to a steamer passing through the Panama Canal is the loss of the Foxton Hall, although the disaster was not the result of using the waterway. The steamer is reported to have had au explosion on board when off Watling Island, made famous by Christopher Columbus, and to have sunk in deep water. Onlv a short time ago arrangements were made for this Liverpool ownership to be transferred to the American flag, so that the loss of tonnage is suffered, by the United States. Herr Heineken, the head of the Nord-deutscher-Lloyd, says in tho ‘ Berliner Tagehlatt ’ that German shipping, although now condemned to rest, remains strong and determined, and will be ready to revive. He declares that there is no necessity to sell German ships to tho Americans, “who would be glad to acquire a mercantile marine at a cheap price.” - Herr Heineken adds that all that German shipping has to fear is “a reduction of dividends during the war.” - After the war “ German ships laden with cargo will again appear in all the seas, and prove to disappointed Albion that the German dag cannot be swept off the lacs of the waters.” ,J '"';"""' '' !
