National Prohibition The Individual Alone Responsible Mr Philip Snowden, M.P., speaking at the Annual Public Meeting of the United Kingdom Alliance, held in Manchester on October 17, 1911, said : “ Indulgence in intoxicating liquor is far too often merely submission to individual weakness —to a selfish desire to satisfy a brutal passion.—(Hear, hear.) In a country like our own which for weal or woe has placed its destinies in the hands of the people, if the people are oppressed they are their own oppressors, and no man has a right to claim to be a leader of the people who has not the courage to tell them that they are responsible for their own conditions—(loud cheers) —and who has not the courage to tell them that of all evils the one most easily .removed today by individual effort is indulgence in alcoholic liquor.” —(Cheers.)
