LATE RETURNS. PORT CHALMERS. Contrary to expectation, the sum coj- ! lecled on Saturday more than equalled that of last year—in fact, there was an increase of £7 4s 3d more than the previous collection. Last year’s collection amounted to £29 Is Id, and, this year to £36 Ss 4d, exclusive of the returns from Deborah Bay, Hayward’s Point, Mihi- ' woka, and Purakanm, which-are not yet I to hand. Mr Leek says the collectors put enthusiasm into their work, and the response was gratifying. The ladies worked from 7 o’clock in the morning to late at night, and the forenoon and afternoon tea j at tho Mayor’s house was appreciated by the collectors.
