The steamer Annam. whirh. ac-ordinc to advices, left Gothenburg for Australian ports, and was followed by the Nordic towards the end of October, is a vessel of 3,206 tons gross register, owned hy the East Asiatic Company. She is rv twin screw oil-burning steamer, and was built in 1913. The Annam is one of a large fleet of prnct i-ally new .-teameTS. and sails under the Danish flair.

It is anticipated that discharge of the Wellington portion of the Shaw, Savi!l. and Albion liner lonic's London cargo -will be completed in time for the, vessel to sail for Lyttelton on Friday to put out the balance.

It is well-nigh impossible to give an adequate description of the absolutely unprecedented state of activity in the shipbuilding yards of Messrs Yickers (Ltd.) at Barrow. For obvious reasons precis details of the armaments under construction cannot be given (says the British 'Trade Review'), but all branches of the supply are being pushed forward at maximum pressure. This has meant a large increase of the staff—at present- about 20,000 men are employed—and the firm have> fortunately been able to take on hands from the yards of the builders of small merchant ships where trade is clack. There is work for many more men, and now the serious problem of bousing these thousands has arisen. WHAT FIGURES REYEAL.

The statistical summary of vessels totally lost, broken up, condemned, etc.. | just published by ' Lloyd's Register.' shows that during' 1915 the gross reduction in the effective mercantile marine of the world amounted to 665 vessels of 717,050 tons, excluding all vessels of less i than 100 tons. Of this total 371 vessels , of 633,002 tons were steamers, and 294 of 184,028 were sailing vessels. These futures as regards steamers are lower tlian those for 1912 by 39.743 tons, but as Tcgards sailing vessels they are for the year 1913 somewhat higher—viz., by 7,808 "tons. One of the most common termina- | tions of a vessel's career is by breaking I up, dismantling, etc. (not in consequence J of casnaltv). The amount of tonnage so dealt with" in 1913 was 108.795 tons, this i being 48,846 ton 3 less than that for 1912. ! Nearly 20Ape.r cent, of the steamers and 16 per cent, of the sailing vessels removed from the merchant fleets of the world in the course of 1013 are accounted for in this manner. Of the total tonnage, of such cases 42J per cent, is represented by United Kingdom vessels, as compared with over 38 per cent, in 1912. The statistical tables exhibit interesting data as to the relative frequency of the j different kinds of casualty, etc., which . conclude the existence of vessels. Standings and kindred casualties, which axe eompriaed under the term " wrecked,'' are much the most prolific causo of disaster. To such casualties are attributable over EBS per cent, of the losses of steamers. and over 54 per cent, of sailing vessels. Cases of abondoned, foundered, and missing vessels aro no doubt frequently more or less similar in the circumstances of loss. If these be taken collectively they form about 21J per cent, of the steamers, and over 29 per cent, of the sailing vessels removed from the mercantile marine during 1913 owing to casualty. The return has been prepared in such a manner as to enable a comparison to be made bet-wean the percentages of loss suffered by each of the principal merchant navies in the -world. Great as the absolute annual loss of vessels belonging to the United Kingdom appears to be, it is seen to form but n very moderate percentage of the mercantile marine of the country, and to compare favorably with the losses ■uatained by other principal maritime countries. '

Wc understand that tho arrangement* for tho engagement and allocation of the men required' on the wharves at Dunedin and Port Chalmers have, since work was resnmed at tho time of the strike, practically been under the -control of a email committee appointed by the Commerce Protection Committee. To ensure the work being distributed in as fair and equitable manner as possible, and that no injustice should be done to those men who offered their services when work was resumed, and who decided to continue working on the wharves, the committee appointed one man in Dune-din and one in Port Chalmers, who engaged and allocated all tho men required. This arrangement has, we are informed, worked most satisfactorily and in the interests of all concerned, and it is recognised that tho general conditions on the wharves at the present time are satisfactory, and that all the men are work in? harmoniously together. A meeting of this committee was held the other day. at which representatives from the different shipping companies and those interested in the employment of labor were present. The whole position was fullv discussed, and it w;ts unanimously derid;xl that the committee should continue in office to deal with any disputes or complaints that might arise in connection with the employment of labor, and at the end of the present year each shipping company (or their representative) would make their own arrangements as regards the engaging <>f the number of men required.
