ESPLANADE PLANS APPROVED,
The mcfhthly meeting of the Ocean Beach Domain Board was held last evening, and attended by Messrs .1. H. Hancock (chairman), G. Hodges, E. S. Clark, J. E. White, J.' B. Shaddock, W. Burnett, and E. Sincock.
The City Engineer submitted plan? and specifications of the Ocean Drive (esplanade). The specifications provide for work to be performed in construction of a roadway and footway from the seaward end of Fortuity road to a point on Victoria road opposite the end of Given >treet. The whole of the work lies in the Ocean Beach. Domain, except a small portion which is at present private property at Forbury road. Convenient access to the beach at Forbury road is to be provided bv a ramp 6ft wide pitched with stone, and following the curve of the present wall to the same level. Access at not less than three other places along tho se.t front i< io bo provided in a similar manner down the riprap face of the sea front of the works. It is proposed to continue the drive along the coast to-. wards Lawyer Head. 'l'he point of turning away from the sea is to be eaieht'.ly constructed, so that the drive, may be combined as one drive without any ri'tsk or break in line or grade. The carriage wayis to bo metalled to a width of 25ft. It is proposed to commence the work of construction at both ends or at a number of places if desired. Ihe estinu-.ud cost, after deducting tho item asphalt (£495) is £3,435.
Tho Chairman said that the plans had been approved by tho district works engineer, with slight alterations. The statement that they had blocked the work was entirely incorrect. Mr Shacklock expressed his satisfaction with the plans. The Chairman said that so far as tho work was concerned thero was no reason why they could not start on it next .Monday morning. Several improvements had been made in the plm> that would inax\u-o the stability of tha work, 'there wac, however, no provision for making a public road into the ground, but thev could temporarily provide a 20ft entrance from Forbuxy road without purchasing property. It was decided that ttw plans and bpeeificatinns, with one or two alterations, bo approved and referred to th« Works Committee, with puwer to piveccd with the work and confer with th>- Expansion League, who hn-d asked to meet the board on Monday.
