The Kamona leaves Timaru to night for Oamarn, Timaru, and Dunedin. She is due here to-morrow afternoon.
The Kini leaves Westport to-day for Dunedin direct.
The Pnkaki is due at Westport to morrow to load coal for Timaru, Oamaru. and Dunedin.
The Zeolandic arrived at Dunedin from Lyttelton yesterday afternoon, and was berthed at the Victoria wharf. After discharging general cargo from West Coast of England ports she will proceed to load Homeward cargo at Port Chalmers, Bluff, Napier, Gisborne. Lyttelton, and Wellington. The Invercargill arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon from Stewart Island with a cargo of timber for the Verdala, and came np to Dunedin this morning. She sails to-morrow for southern ports.
The Waitemata left Auckland on .Saturday for Newcastle. The Maknra arrived at Auckland this morning from Sydney. The Union Company's steamer Taviuni, which left Wellington late on Tuesday night for Auckland, will take the Talunc's running in the Eastern Pacific Islands service. Owing to a falling off in the passenger and cargo trade, the Taluno is to be laid up at Auckland. Similar charters aro announced to that <d ike steamer Wirral, which, is now well on her wav from Montreal to Australian and New Zealand ports. The New Zealand Shipping Company have chartered the steamers Daldorch and Mottisfort to load at Montreal and St. John for Australian and New Zealand ports. The F. and S. Line arranged for the X.S.C. Company’s steamer Hurunui to leave Liverpool on October 17 for Australian ports, and the Dorset to follow mi October 31.
The British steamer Culdergrove. which Eft New Caledonia on July 9 for the Cnited States with a cargo of chrome ore, arrived at New York on August 20. After discharging her cargo she will load case ■il for New Zealand ports. According to the ‘ Sydney Shipping List.’ the present ruling rates of freight from Newcastle to intercolonial ports are : —Auckland Bs, Gisborne 16s, Napier 10s 6d, Wellington 9s 6d. Wanganui, 13s, Lyttelton 10s, Timaru 10s 6d, Dunedin 10a 6d, Bluff 10s 6d. The following notice in regard to the Kaipara bar has been gazetted by the .Marine Department:—“ Notice is hereby given that the shoals on Kaipara bar have of late been constantly shifting; the best rhannel to cross the bar at present i» with the beacons in a lino with one another, where a depth of 21ft of water at mean low water springs was found on September 15 by the Government steamer Ilinemoa. Masters of vessels are warned not to go to the southward of that line, and when the semaphore arms can bo seen at the signal station to carefully watch their movements and steer as directed; too much caution cannot be exorcised in navigating the bar at present, as the changes are too frequent to be depended on for very long.”
Messrs Richardson ami Company’s new steamer Mako has left Glasgow for New Zealand. The vessel was ready to sail when the war broke out, but owing to the extra risk and heavy insurances she wasdotained at Homo. 'The original intention will probably be adhered to with regard to calling at Edithburg, South Australia, for a load of gvpsura and salt for Napier._ The Mako should arrive in the Dominion about New Year. The Mako was built specially for Eicbardson and Co. at a cost of £20.000. She is an up-to-date passenger and cargo boat of about 600 tons gross, or twice the size of the Squall. There is accommodation for 20 passengers, and the vessel will be able to carry about 550 tons of cargo. The Mako will, in conjunction wittj the Kahn, maintain a weekly service between Auckland, East Coast bays, Gisborne, and Napier. A shot from the Heads’ batteries was fired across the Victoria’s bows when she was entering the harbor about 4.30 this morning. She had evidently run up the wrong signal. WAITOMO HELD UP. DEMANDS BY FIREMEN. [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 1. The Union Company's steamer Waitomo, which was to have sailed this morning for Newcastle, was unexpectedly held up by the action of the firemen, who demanded that the stokehold crew be increased bv three. They claimed that as the vessel was going on a deep-water voyage the work would be heavier than in ordinary intercolonial runs. The men also stated that other vessels going on similar oversea voyages had been given an increased number of firemen, and before the strike the Waitomo herself had had such an addition to the stokehold Complement.
The management declined to accept this demand, and the vessel accordingly is indefinitely held np. An interesting arrival at Port Jackson recently was the French exploring schooner La Curieuse, in command of Captain RaiHier dm Baty (says the ‘Daily Telegraph’). A vessel of 75 tons, and with a crew of seven men, she set out from Boulogne on July 16, 1913, bound on an exploring cruise in the South Pacific. The vovage is expected to occupy three years. The vessel is to carry-out an even more extensive and interesting voyage than that made to the Kerguelen Islands in the J. B. Charcot from 1907 to 1909, by Captain du Baty. On the passage out she called at Madeira, the Cape, the Kerguelen Islands, where she has been carrying out governmental research work, also Albany, and Hobart. From Hobart she will proceed to New Zealand. The return journey will be made through the Panama Canal. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
