Megget. retiring from the office oi secretaiy. was heartily thanked for his services. Mr Milnes read and demonstrated a paper by Mr "Westland lot Canterbury) on •'Southern Variable Stars." This paper dealt with all the variable stars that are well placed for, observation in the Southern Hemisphere, including stars that might be seen in European latitude!, but with. some difficulty, perhaps. This paper dealt also with the'problem of the physical cause of these stars' variability, advaiicing the theory of rotation —the * assumption that these'stars were themselves! rotating .at i, perfectly uniform rate, and as most of them had only a very narrow rang© of magnitude, there was "ho-great difficulty in supposing that their photospheres wera tint equally luminous all over, and that this was die. xldn of their varidbilitv.
