'Tho Library Committee recommend that authority be granted to Cany opt, repairs and renewals to the Library building and fixtures; at an estimated cost of £69 3s. The cost of the work can be borne out of a saving on the department*# allocations, and it is recommended that it bo carried out at once on specifications to be prepared and submitted by the building surveyor. 'Tho work will .also help to eomo extent in relieving distress through want of employment due to tho war. Tho Works Committee report that the City engineer has been instructed as follows :—To act. with the superintendent of reserves in the matter of improving and planting tho hank at the junction of Heriot raw and London street, the cost of which work is estimated to tm £5, and to provide a water trough in the Kaikorai Valley road near tho foot of Stone street or Cicnclg street, at a cost of £5. Authority has been granted to expend the sunvof £4O in breaking stone in the Water of Leith near the Leith street bridge, provided tho Employment!, and Relief Committee will contribute a. similar amount Tho work is to bo considered as relief work, and the metal will be charged to stock in tho first instance, and later to tho streets on which it may l.m used as per the allocations. Tho Water Committee recommends: That in connection with the deputation from the Harbor Board that waited upon the council in reference to fire protection at tho wharves by the installation of a motor tiro pump," the committee report, having had a conference with representatives of tho board regarding the matter, and, as a result of the conference, the, committee are of opinion that tho needs of fire protection along tho waterfront would bo better served by a larger water main than is now in use than by the installation of a motor fire pump. It. is therefore recommended that tho existing mains in Rattray at’ce.t and Wharf street be substituted by a- 6m main. Tho estimated cost of giving effect to this proposal is £1,500. and tho recommendation is made subject to hall-cost (£650! being found by the- Otago Harbor Board. That authority be granted to expend a sum of £3OO in clearing ground on the water reserves for tree-planting, on the understanding that, tins amount is subsidised £ for £ by the Otago Patriotic and General Welfare Association. This recommendation is the outcome, of the committee's consideration of tho request raised by deputation to the 'council from the Employment and .Relief Committee of the Patriotic Association and tlre Otago Expansion League.-—As it will again bo necessary to extend tho nursery next season to provide trees for planting on the water reserves, authority has been granted to expend a sum of £2O in clearing and ploughing mi additional area. The work of clearing the ground will provide work for the unemployed, and tho Patriotic Association have been asked to contribute half the estimated cost.—The city engineer has been instructed to report to the committee. regarding the Lee, .Stream high and low water supply, and also as to how far the present, supplies will be adequate to cope with the demands of a dry season. The. General Committee report haying given consideration to the question of filtering the water supplied to tho Moray Place Public. Baths, and they hope to approach the'council at next meeting with a definite recommendation regarding the matter. In tho meantime tho city engineer Inin been authorised to obtain a working model of the proposed filter, and also an analysis of the water-.
Tho Reserves Committee recommend: That with reference to 'the matter of the proposed levelling of Chisholm Park, which was referred hack to (lie committee by the council, the said pioposil be abandoned, and that, in lieu thereof authority he granted for the construction of two playing areas on the Ocean Beach Domain at St. Kilda, provided the, consent of the Ocean Beach Domain Board he obtained._ and that tho Relief Committee pay half the estimated cost. That with respect to the matter of forming a new recreation ground on the, Montecillo reserve, which was referred back to tho committee for further consideration, the work be now proceeded with as per plan prepared by the city engineer, at an estimated cost of £ooo for removing material and £SO for top-dress-ing, provided the, total sum can he obtained in the following manner^: —Jimnington Ground Committee, £75; City Council, £75; Garden Fete Society, £25; and Relief Committee, £175; total, £3OO. The work, as previously reported, was to have, cast £2OO, but. with the, enlargement of the area, as now proposed the additional £IOO js required. Tire Mayor has given notice to move—.“That the'resolution passed by the council on the 27th November. 1912. fixing certain hob flays for the outdoor staff lie rescinded.”
