The Undaunted's first wireless message on Saturday read : “ Pursuing four German dost r-.n era.” The second: “Sunk the lot.” The skipper of a Lowestoft trawler - relates that he saw the destroyers off the Dutch coast. When the British appeared the destroyers opened out, but the British vessels’ speed frustrated the move. The Undaunted lired her forward guns, and one destroyer was blown out of the water. The vest wore sunk rapidly. FURTHER DETAILS. LONDON, October 19. Details regarding tho sinking of the four German destroyers show that by fine seamanship and energy they wore compelled to fight, 'they faced the odds bravely, and opened fire at a range of live miles. Then tho Britishers closed in and began a running tight. While the cruiser Undaunted. devoted its attention to two destroyers, the British destroyers made fine practice on the others. The Loyal quickly shot down the funnel and wheel of one, and the Lance, Legion, and Lennox battered the other. Tne German gunnery is described as pour. The British destroyers were almost unscathed at the end of half an hour’s lighting. After the first of tho enemy’s -craft had been sunk the others still fought gamely at intervals, tjoiue maintained their lire until the end. Tho engagement lasted 90 minutes. BRITISH v. Amusement was caused in Washington by the receipt oi a, post card from a Harvard ex-student, wno is reported as lighting in the English Army, offering £1.000.000 if Harvard will consent to dismiss the German , professors. It is regarded as a huge hoax. An American citizen was fined, at Bow street fur carrying 27 business letters to ami from Berlin and London on behalf of merchants. A penalty of £3 was imposed for each letter. The Standard Oil Company have protested to the United States Government against the seizure of the Bnndilla. The Belgian Minister is sending a shipload of food and clothing to the refugees in Holland. Thousands of British women are feverishly knitting the warm garments that ere indispensable to tho troops in a mater campaign. Snow is falling in the Ardennes.

INSURANCE OF PRODUCE. FACJLITIEiTiXTENDED. In a statement to the Press yesterday the Minister of Internal Affairs announced that the Government, after further negotiations with the Imperial War Insurance Office, through the High Commissioner in London, have been enabled to extend the facilities for the insurance of produce from New Zealand ports to the United Kingdom. The arrangement made is for the Government to cable to the High Commissioner the names of consignors, descriptions and values of cargoes, amount of insurance required, name of steamer, and date of sailings. The High Commissioner will then pay the pre-
mi inns to the Imperial War Risk insurance Oilier, and secure policies, cabling to Government when it is done. The general manager of the State Fire Insurance Office, Wellington, will receive particulars of cargoes under this scheme, and collect premiums here from consignors. This opens the question of the cost of cablegrams. 'The Imperial rate is now two guineas per cent. Cargoes will be accepted only in hulls already insured by the Imperial War Risk Insurance Office through the several approved shipowners’ associations in London. Similar arrangements have been made subject to the same conditions to cover cargoes from New Zealand to eastern and western ports of the United States of America and Canada. War risk insurance on goods from New Zealand to Australia will he taken by tho New Zealand Government under the War Risk Insurance Act recently passed at the rate of 2s 6d per cent. QUESTIONS IN PARLIAMENT. In the House of Renresentatives yesterday afternoon, in reply to Mr Bradney, the Minister of Defence said it was intended to increase the pay of the men in the forts, but he cjuUl not say at the moment what the increase would he. In a, further reply to Air Bradney, the Minister said it was rather a large order' to ask the Government to compel all foreigners in the Dominion to report themselves at regular intervals. A careful watch was being - preserved, but it was not considered wise to take steps that might seem harsh where there was no reason for suspicion. Reports were constantly coming in to him, and any suspicious cases would be dealt with.—The Prime Minister, discussing this question, said that there were many Germans and Austrians who wore old settlers, and who, ho had every reason to believe, were sympathetic towards ns in the present war. They had shown this by their contributions to the patriotic funds, an 1 in many cases had allowed their sons to go to the front. He had no reason to doubt the loyalty of those people, and saw no reason to impose the indignity upon them of making them report themselves. At the same time, if any suspicious circumstances were discovered the suspects would be handed over to the military authorities, and if found guilty by court martial everyone knew what the consequences would be. GENERAL ITEMS.' COMMANDER OE THE HAWKE. Our Bluff corrcspnnflent wires :—Commander Blunt, late of H.AES. Pioneer, who was wrdl-known in New Zealand ports, is believed to have been in command of the ill-fated H.M.K. Hawke. Commander Blunt was in command on the occasion of the collision between H.M.S. Hawke and the Olympic two years ago.
