TEACHERS AND UNIVERSITY WORK. The annual meeting of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, concluded yesterday. The following resolutions were carried.: —'"' That in view of the importance to teachers of the study of the science of education, the Undversity Senate bo a?/ked to make, the following alterations -to the arts course:—(a) That education be included in the list of honors subjects, (b) That the conditions for the doctorate of literature be altered to permit of the presentation of a thesis embodying the results of original research in educational practice or literature." "That our institute enter an emphatic protest against the unsuitability of the hours at which many University classes are held, whereby teachers in employment are debarred not only from attending these classes, but also from enjoying that free University education allowed for in the Education Act." " That the Department of Education be asked to consider the following:—A teacher who is unable, for various reasons, to attend the University classes, and who must, therefore, <sit for terms as an exempted student, should be allowed to take advantage of the* bursary in so far as college registration fee and fees for term and degree examinations are concerned." " That teachers with ID certificate, living beyond the free ticket radius, be not required to take science for the C certificate." "That this meeting reaffirm tho belief that any scheme of salaries based on either average attendance or average roll number cannot be satisfactory, and instruct the delegates to the forthcoming meeting in Wellington to do their utmost to oppose any scheme based on these principles." A motion of thanks to Mr J. Jeffery for his work in connection with the institute was carried with acclamation and musical honors. Votes of thanks were also carried to tho Education Board and to the Technical College managers for affording facilities for the holding of the meeting and to the retiring officers.
