BOWLING.

[By Meastjbeb.] Tile final banner matches were played in good fresh weather last Saturday, Dunedin meeting Xurth-east Valley and St. Kilda engaging Caledonian. The mother club won all three sections against Valley (thus retaining their lend and winning the banner), while St. Kilda won two of their **»ree games, and took second place. nearly lost to Valley in the game, their lead being but a couple of —56 to 54—when all was over. For Dunedin Bentley led Brown by 22 to 19, and D. Robertson just headed Abbott bv 19 to 18. For Vallev A. Cope had a lead of 17 to H. C. Foster's 15: so the contest was close indeed. In the other two sections Dunedin won comfortably. St. Kflda's wins against Caledonian vrere not too easy. In the Association section they were certainly up in all three rinks, M'Curdy having a fine win from Veitch by 30 to 16. In the Centre game D. M'Far.lane's 28 to D. Scott's 12 was a good performance, nullifying the effect of Ccllins's lead of 23 to 16 over A. Walker. On Caledonian Green, in the District contest, St. Kilda were down in all three rinks. But there was some gsod play on both sides.

Dunedin fairly deserved the honor of holding the banner. Out of 41 games they won 32. Their nine losses were to the following :—Roslyn won by 60 to 58 in the Association game and by 66 to 46 in the Centre match: St. Kilda had two wins —7B to 74 in the Association and 68 to 50 in the District ; Otago won two games, 60 to 53 in the Association and 66 to 52 in the Centre; Caledonian were ahead by 60 to 49 in the District; Kaituna won by 72 to 61 in the Association; and Balmacewen were up 65 to 42 in the Centre. It will be noticed that several of the losses were very close games, and Dunedin’s record for the season must be regarded as first-class. It was a very different showing to that of the previous season, when they were defeated time and again. St. Hilda's position as runner-up was also well earned. Of their 41 games 10 were lost. 1 drawn, and 50 won. The losses were to Green Island in the Centre contest by 47 to 45 : Taieri by 64 to 60 in the Centre: Dunedin. 80 to 46 in the Centre : Caledonian, 75 to 58 in the District: Kaituna, 65 to 61 in the Centre and 69 to 51 in the District: Balmacewe'n. 76 to 60 in the District : Caversham. 59 to 50 in the Centre; Fairfield, 71 to 50 in the Association and 69 to 61 in the District. The draw was against Kaikorai (64 all) in the Association. Here again some of the games were very close. Secretary A. H. Allen, with his usual prompt! tude. has posted up his statistics, which are complete, showing the club's doings in detail. Skips' performances are set out. rinks engaged are shown, etc. The total points scored by the club were 2.783; against. 2,515. Average scored per rink, 22: against, 181- St. Hilda intend to close down finally on Saturday week next.

Caledonian occupied third place. They lost 12 game; during the season. Their most serious defeat was by Taieri, who were victors in all three sections. Dunedin beat them by 75 to 50 in the Association and 68 to 45 in the Centre; Valley, bv 65 to 58 in. the Centre and 61 to 54 in the District; and St. Kilda by 74 to 52 in ;he Association and 62 to 55 in the Centre. Single losses were against Otago 73 to 64 (District), Kaituna 65 to 46 (District), and Momingtnn 60 to 50 (District). The table below gives the final results of the season’s intcrclub matches:

Eleven Wednesday matches were played by Kaituna Club, and the result was 4 urins, 5 losses, and 2 ties. Wins were secured against North-east Valley, Otago, Caversham. and Wakari. Last Saturday Green Island closed with a bit of ceremony, and Otago concluded, a feature being the decision of the club's Championship Doubles, in the final of which E. Patterson and F. H. King defeated M'Gaskell and P. Mark.

Wakari Club also ended matters on the same day. President and Mrs Tilburu seeing to it that visitors enjoyed themselves. Next Saturday Kaituna Club closedown. The president (Mr W. A. Scott) and Mrs Scott wifi be pleased to meet the members and their lady friends at the Dunedin Club’s Green next Saturday, on the occasion of the official dosing. Tho match President v. Tire-president will be played, and the selectors (Messrs M'Laren and Hogg) will arrange the rinks as players turn up, and to allow of full advantage being taken of whatever sunshine there may be members are asked to turn up punctually at 2 o’clock, as it gets too cold to play after 5. The Executive of the Dunedin Centre will take advantage of tho opportunity to present the club with the Champion Banner." The Executive Council are to meet on Friday night, when the provision of bowltesting machines and the revised laws of the game are matters set down for consideration.

The following remarks by a Northern writer are worth thinking over :—A good deal has been said about the time limit in tournament bowls, and every time a big programme is before the bowlers to get through the wisdom of this innovation has been brought home. There are some neversweats and dilatory people connected with fnis game who creep along at their own snail-like pace, having unnecessary inquests on the heads, walking up and down the rinks, thus delaying the whole tourna ment.
