CODE CABLEGRAMS
COX CESSION S UNLIKELY.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,
MELBOURNE, September 18. A despatch from the Imperial Government expresses regret that to far it has not been practical to obtain a reduction in the Irate for Transatlantic code- telegrams, but'the matter will come up for consideration together with the rates for deferred telegrams and cable letters in a year’stimo. It is : doubtful whether it will be possible tobarrango for any material alteration in the charge, for code telegrams to Australia while the terminal charge in the Commonwealth for full rate messages remains as high .os 5d per word. It is difficult for the Imperial Government to support a Stateowned Atlantic cable, since it could not bo worked on a commercial basis without a. deficit of £20,000 per annum.
