FIRE AT AUCKLAND.

OLD MAN BURNED TO DEATH. [Pee United Press Association.] . AUCKLAND, May 19. A boarding ' house containing 16 rooms, in Hobson street, which was owned and occupied by Mr Allan Morton, was gutted by fire, with the exception of two rooms, at 4.30 this morning. Practically nothing was saved. The house was occupied by the Morton family and 10 boarders. All escaped except Henry William Smith, aged 60 years, who was burned to death. Mr Morton found Smith in a room at the end of a passage. The room was ablaze, and the man’s bedding was burning. Smith was partly burned and insensible, hut as he was a heavy man Morton was unable to move him, and had to beat a hasty retreat. Smith came from Sydney, where his relatives reside.
