ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

At the inquest at Hastings concerning the death of Charles Flanders, aged 19, who met with a fata! gun accident whilst duck-shooting, a verdict was returned that deceased was accidentally killed by a gunshot wound, the accident being caused by the negligent use of a gun. The following rider was added : —“The frequency of accidents arising solely; from the careless use of firearms suggests the advisability of legislation requiring all persons using or having the possession of firearms and ammunition to take out a license issued by some competent expert after careful examination and inquiry regarding the propored licensee.” A Wellington message states that Mrs Helen Bowen, a widow, 58 years of age. was found dead yesterday in a private hospital at Waverley.
