The Hon. H. D. Bell at Wellington ves. terday received a deputation representing the Girls Friendly Society. He outlined the arrangements ho had made in regard to future immigration. The Girls’ Friendly Society and the Young Women’s Christian Association in the centre concerned would be informed how many girls would arrive and of the fact that the Government matron (under the Immigration Department) would also be present in port at the arrival of the immigration vessel. The Government matron and the matrons of the two institutions would visit the vessel in company, and the girls would be informed of the desire of the Government that they should go to one or otner of the two places. Further, Mr Bell explained that he wished the societies to consider the question of reserving for the department at the time of the arrival of an immigrant ship four or five rooms, and of having available, in case of emergency, further accommodation at suitable boarding-houses. For this and for the superintendence of the girls between the time they left the ship and of their departure for their new homes the Government weald be prepared to pay a retaining fee apart from ordinary boarding expenses. • Mike: “Why do thim false ayes be. made of glass now?” Pat: “Sure, an’ how else could they see throo ’om, ye thick-head?”— ‘ Yale Record.’ A man from Australia paid Is 8d duty on a'ls IGd bottle of Baxter's Lung Preserver.
