A P.A. wire states that work at the Ross Goldfields mine is proceeding satisfactorily, and it is expected that within the course of a few days the famous Gassins workings, which are said by old miners to contain exceedingly rich gold, will bo reached. The management are very reticent as to what is taking place, but from reliable information to hand important developments are anticipated in the near future.

RISE AND SHINE. j In their 13th annual report the directors of the Rise and Shine Gold Dredging Company state:—As already reported, the No. 1 dredge, with new pontoons, and having been thoroughly renovated and improved, is once more at work. She was dropped down to the ground between the cuts of No. 1 and No. 2 dredges, and is now earning good returns, lire new gold-saving tables and the other improvements (such as the lengthened screen, raised drop chute, travelling hoisting gear, etc.) are giving great satisfaction, rite pontoons for No. 2 dredge (those of the old No. 1) were hauled out of the water about the middle of March, and have been thoroughly tested and overhauled; all weak places have been renewed, and replanking is rapidly progressing. The hoods in tne Clut-ha- covered the'whole of the building site, and retarded operations for a time, but most fortunately no serious harm was done. Some delay arose through difficulties in getting cartage from Roxburgh, where part of the machinery purchased was lying, but this portion of the work is now practically completed. Your directors hope to see the No. 2 dredge completed and working by July, provided no further unforeseen difficulties arise. Mr James Milne is the retiring drector. RETURNS.
