PRIVATE BARS
THE ACT ADEQUATE. [Special to the Stab.] WELLINGTON, January 4. Though the licensing trade and the Prohibition leaders are concerned about the law relating to barmaids’ registration, the Labor Department is going to enforce tha provisions of iho Act. The difficulty centres around the employment of barmaids in bars not opening into the street, legal opinion lacing that such abar is not defined in thn statutes, and therefore the provisions of the Barmaids’ Registration Act does not apply. An official statement has been received i by the Wellington Hotel Employees’ Federation from the Labor Department to the effect that the Crown Jaw officers have advised that the Act of last session, and its provisions, are. quite sufficient to prevent the employment of unregistered barmaids in any part of hotels. The department has further intimated that instructions have been given to the police to take proceedings in any case where unregistered barmaids are being employed. The union intend to report qoecific cases so as to test the matter in the courts.
