"WAIPORI TRIPLICATION.

the latest report. Ct Marlow (chairman of the Electric Power and Lighting Committee) returned from W a.i pori yesterday. In the course of conversation this morning he stated that they uere making splendid progress with the tunnel, which would be completed and ready for opening by the 26th inst. It is intended to start the gangs on Monday ■morning with the construction of the weir. The loads are now in fine order, allowing cement to b© sent forward in large rinan’ titles, It is estimated that it will require a little over 3,000 bags of cement to finish the work at the wear and at the tunnel, and there are over 1,800 bags on the ground at present. The bulk of the machinery for the triplication is now on the ground, and the work of extending the building for holding the plant is now completed. Ail the foundations for the machinery are also ready. From the 26th inst., when the tunnel is finished, the Burning at the lower end, which has always been a source of danger, will no longer lie required. The fluming at the upper end will also be done away with when once the weir is constructed. The fluming there, however, is solid rock, and has never at any time given trouble. ’ The weir, it is anticipated, will hold sufficient water in about eight weeks’ time for the fluming to be removed entirely. The communication from the mouth of the tunnel to the penstock is also completed, and shows a very workmanlike job. The raising of Lake Luella will not be gone on with this summer on account of all efforts being confined to the completion of the triplication scheme. “We are now in the happy position,” concluded Cr Marlow, “of being able to remove the irksome restrictions we havehad to place on consumers in the past, and to receive all applications for power that may come along.”
