THE ARBITRATION COURT.

AN IMPORTANT PRONOUNCEMENT. [Feu United I’b.ess Association.] WELLINGTON, December 6. In adding parties to tho painters’ award to-day the Arbitration Court appended the following n/jmorandum: Where an award is made in connection with a trade or industry the parties to the award should be limited, as far as possible to employers who are engaged in that particular trade or industry. Tho employers named in this coder are not carrying on business as master painters, and they, therefore,' should not bo added as ordinary parties _ to tho award. They, however, axe doing work from time to time that oomes within the scope of tho award, and are employing journeymen painters. In these circumstances the proper course to adopt, in the opinion of the Court, -s to add them as parties to tho award, so as to bind men to pay the wages lived by tho awaid, and also* to pay for overtime and for work done on holidays according to tne provisions of tho award, but they should not bo bound by the other provisions of the award, which, prirna fame, axe applicable only to employers in business as master painters. The Court adopted tho came course with regard to builders and other similar employers when dealing with the boilermakers’ dispute in September last. That and the present case are to bo treated aa settling tho practice of tho Court with regard to all similar cases.
