SATURDAY SOCCER.

SENIOR GRADE. Kaftangata S, Roalyn-Wakari L Maori Hill 6, Northern 2. Christian Brothers 2, Morningtcm 0. Ravensbourno 6, Scrathorn 1. Cop Table. The following table shows the positions of teams in the Senior Cup competition

Review of Matches. If surprise count for anything, the Association football matches in Dunedin on Saturday were all that could bo desired. Three of the eight teams competing for the senior championship took the field in high hope, and possibly with a quite justifiable belief that they really could not lose; and each of the three left the field convinced absolutely that they had not won. Without fluke or frenzy, Maori Hill come down from the mountains to the Valley, and whacked Northern, last year’s champions; Kaitangata came from the mines and showed Roslyn-Wakari how to play football ; and Christian. Brothers went up to the hills ancj beat Momington. If results had been reversed, very few people would have been surprised. But a change of fortune is always welcome, and the strong teams that were beaten will probably gain by their losses. They may go in for more training now. They need it. The game between Kaitangata and Kcs-lyn-Wakari, on Culling Park, was good to i see. It was fast, keen, and rich in clever j football, and free from roughness. Man for man, section for section, team for team, any way you like, Kaitangata—first, last, and always-—were superior. The miners played the long-passing game, and played it most effectively. And the forwards wore supported judiciously by the half-backs and backs. The goalkeeper was a bit weak, but then he was only a substitute, and has to be congratulated on Ills willingness to fill a breach, which should not have been made. Hoslyii-Wakari also played a substitute in goal. It was not that fact, however, which brought defeat. The goalkeeper was least to blame. The local team’s defence was very poor as a whole, and the forwards rarely got into their usual stride, as the saying is. In the Kaitangata forwards there was one man with a bald bit on bis head who was obviously the best player of the twenty-two. His'name is Rarity, Scotland his hame. If .punning were not tabooed one might have said that the play of Rarity was, indeed, a rarity hereabout. The Selection Committee need have no trouble in choosing an inside-right forward for represents live matches. Them are none in Dunedin half as good as Rarity. It ie not necessary tc describe the game in detail. In the first spell Kaitangata scored 2 coals, Neil and Olliver being the scorers. The visitors’ play was worth more than two. In the second spell Kaitangata secured 3 goals as against Roslyn-Wakari’s 1. Stephenson, Cuthbertson, and Rarity (a penally kick) were the scorers for Kaitangata, and T. Ritchie for Roalyn-Wakan. Mr \V. It. Sinclair was referee, and ho had a pleasant task. Maori Hill and Northern played to the whistling of Mr T. R. M'Olllivray at the Cardens Cronnd. The play opened promisingly, Maori Hill havipg the slope and a breeze in their favor. On occasions the play was fast, each side having a turn at attacking. As a rule Northern are strong on goal-getting, but it was their portion to eec Maori Hill revel in the joy of scoring, -'mith drew first blood, and later on headed a forward charge which resulted in Shepherd and the ball being pushed through the goal. Then Smith was prominent again, and scored a third goal. Just l>efore the interval Evans handled the ball within the penally area, and Reynolds scored with the penalty kick. In the second spell each side got 2 goals, Northern having woke up a little. The order of the scoring was; Campbell (Maori Hill), Robertson (Northern), Paterson (Northern), Rigby (Maori Hill). The result was a fair gauge of the game. Tho brothers Bee by and Smith were of great service to the winners, and R. Shepherd was a tower of strength for Northern. Momington Ground was in good condition for the match between Christian Brothers and Momington, which was played under Mr Preston’s control. All through the game was fast and fairly oven. Playing against the wind, Christian Brothers made a good start, and scored a goal early in the spell, Tarleton turning to his club’s profit a fine pass from Smith. That was tho only score in the first half. Laffcy and Wakelin did yeomen’s service for the Brothers, and Baillie and J. Haig were prominent for Momington. Luck and good defence were against Momington in the second spoil. They attacked strongly on different occasions, and were awarded two penalty kicks, but J. Haig and Baillie each faded to put the ball past Cotter. This was what would have made a Mahomedan cry M Kismet!” The Greens tried for more success, and with fine combination they practically took charge of the game. The Brothers’ second goal was scored by Laffoy. Expectation was not upset at the match between Ravensbonrne and Southern on the Asylum Ground. Southern had to play several emergencies, and they had little hope of overcoming the bustling lade from the harbor side. Ravensbonrne attacked most of tho time, and goals were scored by Fisher, Page, Mainos in the first spell, and by Fisher (throe) in the second spelL Hall scored for Southern in the first half of the game. Fisher played a capital game, and excelled himself as a goai-gettor. Southern's luck is out this season, but they need not despair for that. SECOND GRADE. Momington 2, Roslyn-Wakan 1.
