LATE SHIPPING

ARRIVED.—May 2. Moann, s.s., ?.915 tons, WorraJl, from Melbourne via Hobart and lire Bluff.

Moana, s.s., did not leave the Bluff till three o’clock this morning. She berthed at Port at 1.40 this afternoon, and was to come up to town this evening.

REPAIRING THE KNIGHT OF THE GARTER.

Unceasingly by day and by night Dio repairing of tho Knight of the Garter is going on in the new clock. Good progress has been made. Nearly all the new bottom plates'are in place, and when the inside shell of her double bottom has been renewed work will he concentrated on the damaged .stern frame and rudder post, the new portion of which is not yet clear of the forge. As might he expected in the case of a vessel that steamed on to pinnacled rocks, which brought her to a standstill, much skill of a nature rarely called for has been employed to repair the damage. An instance of this was evident in straightening a portion of the rudder frame without removing it from the ship. An iron box perforated with holes was titled round the bent portion of the stern frame, and pipes carrying compressed air from the engineering shop blew the combustible contents of the box into an intense heat. Presently the section of the frame under treatment —it measured 16in broad by 6in Illicit—was glowing at awhile heat. Then heavy suspended rammers struck the white mass here, there, and apparently everywhere until at length it was punched into perfect alignment. The difficulty of the job was increased by the fact that it all look place 3Gtt above the concrete floor of the dock and underneath tho vessel’s lowering counter —a job in mid-air.
