HARRIERS
,* RUNS ON .SATURDAY. The Pacific Harriers, to the number of twenty-eight, ran from the Electric Tea Rooms, Gardens, as the guests of the Committee. Messrs Henderson and Austin had charge of the bags, and laid a trail up Opoho Road, then past Knox College, on to the top of the hill, which was followed till overlooking Normanby. Turning for home the trail led down into the Valley, through Dalmore, flushing via Pine Hill Terrace and the Main road. After dinner a pleasant evening was spent in music, songs, and recitations. St. Joseph's Harriers were the guests of the Rev. Father F. Buckley, and ran from Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. L. ,7. Coughlan and L. O'Sullivaii had charge of the paper, and laid a lone trail (about ten miles), which searched the younger members. It gave them fitness however to enjoy the hospitality of their host. The journey matters little if the end be good. The Caversham Harriers ran from the North-east Valley School, close on thirty members taking part in the run, a record attendance. A splendid trail was laid by Westwood and M'Tvor. Starting from the back of the school it led up a steep hill and alom; a road for some little distance. Then down the hill again, across a roughly ploughed paddock and across the Main road, and up through a bush on to a hill. Here the pack got slightly mixed, owing to another trail crossing their own trail. The main pack, under Captain Beatson, crossed the hills and came out by the road next to the Normanby tannery, then along the main road until near the school, when a fast run home concluded a most enjoyable afternoon's sport.
The Civil Service Harriers held their official opening ran from the St. Clair Baths, there being a good attendance. The trail led towards the cliffs, thence through Mr Hamilton's paddock, and skirted the golf links. The pack then indulged in a good sprint home along Allandale and Bench streets. After the run several had the pleasure of a dip in the briny.
The Dunedin Harriers ran from Waitati, twenty-one members taking part. Hawkes and Jackson laid a fine trail over varied ground. Towards the Orokonui Home the tills weTe tackled, and some gorse reminded runners of the weakness of flesh. Waitati Stream was crossed and the trail continued over the hills towards the creamery, and ended with a smart run along the Main Toad. V. Hawkes, of the South Canterbury Harriers, was welcomed by members, and took part in the run.
The Carcill Road Methodist Club ran from Wesley Church, nineteen members, including the minister (Lev. W. J. Entieott), being present. Bruton and Passmore were the hares, and the tr;iil was laid by way of the Lower Portobello road tr> Waverley, then up the hill to the rocky bluff opposite to Ravenybourne. Tho return journey was via Tomahawk and Lawyer Head. At Tomahawk one of the hares was oau<jht by H. Pullen and W. Cole. In the run home want of training was noticeable.
The Y.M.C.A. Harriers held their weekly run from Wingatui. Messrs H. D. Bedford and 0. Begg were in charge of the bags, and took the trail over some good hilly country. On starting from the racecourse the pack, in charge of Deputycaptain Hannah, had some difficulty in picking up the paper. The trail led round the bilk until the Si'.verstream was reached, then struck out again for the course, whore the rood was reached and the prek arrived heme after a good run. On Wednesday afternoon the St. Andrew HarrieTS will run from the Bungalow Tea Rooms, St. Kilda., as guests of Mr A. E. Rosevear.
