LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The legislature Bill was put through committee as received from the Hour?' and passed its final stages. In committee on tho .Shops and Offices Bill unsuccessful attempts wore made by the Hon. Air Jenkinson and the Hon. Air Barr to reduce the hours fixed by the. Bill for tho weekly service of assistants over sixteen years in hotels and restaurants (fifty-eight and sixty-two respectively), but without avail. The Rating Act Amendment Bill was passed. The Public Holidays and Municipal Corporations Bills were received from the House and read a second time. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The Public Works Act Amendment Bill was committed. On Mr Arnold's motion a clause was inserted providing that a local authority may, by special order, raise a special loan. —Mr Philipps moved to amend the schedule by providing that land may be taken for the purpose of show grounds or agricultural halls, a? well as for other purposes. Amendment carried by 47 votes to 19.—A sub-clause providing for the metalling of streets to the satisfaction of local bodies wherever estates have been subdivided was carried by 44 vote* to 20. —The - Bill was reported as amended.
