SPORTING

FORBURY PARK 'TROTTING. First Day.—Friday. I he attendance equalled expectations, but a large number of the crowd must have been onlookers, for the totalisator-takings came to only £4,555, or £ls6£ more than on the first day last year. Of course, there fvas a large return from the bookmakers, twenty paying the license fee. Nevertheless, the returns from betting were not large for an inaugural day. Perhaps “ the regulars were a little cautious, not quite knowing how the new track would suit particular horses. Mr P. Miller, acting as judge, gave his decisions promptly; Mr L. C. Hazlett started in a most capable manner; and the large dividends showed that the public could not pick holes in Mr Gourley’s handicapping. The gold medals for the Inaugural Handicap and the President's Handicap vvero duly presented after each race. Andv Pringle took one and Ni L. Price the other. Pringle held Tring Park very steady in the Inaugural Handicap, and that brought about the victory over Lcnore. One skill would have been fatal. Neglected made the Pony Handicap quite a one-horse race, though Major Taylor might have caught her but tor mixing twice. Marie Narclle owed her success m the President's Handicap to her superior smartness in beginning. Jack I racy had just about the same speed ns the but could not catch up. though I I ingle did all he could by reserving a spurt tor the finish. Piuewood. winner of the Amateur Handicap, would probably have won easily if as well ridden ns Bella Mac. -As it was he had all his work to head the roan marc at the finish. Imperial Duncan broke. Arbitrator showed a lot of pace in the Stewards' Handicap, and apparently had the race easily in hand a quarter from home, hut Bamboo staved "ell, and was only just beaten. Backers called the Dash Handicap “the Derringcotte Stakes. ’ and made a rare mistake. Wood Nymph fed throughout till nearing the post, when Jack Tracy made a splendid spurt to the front and won comfoiTably. Jhe favorite tired, and could only get third place. Imagination led all the "‘ay in the Dominion Handicap. At one stage ho must have heeli 100 vards in front, but he was coming back at the finish, and Frisco might have won with a lighter driver. Dragoon and Mantle were neck and neck in the last half-mile of the St. Hilda Handicap, ami Dragoon, skipping in the last stride, was beaten a neck. Hirovas a hot favorite, and Mantle the outsider of the party. Results in continuation of yesterday's report;— FIRST AMATEUR HANDICAP, 50 suvs; second 7.j sovs, third 2J) savs. 2m. Mr J.
