THEFTS OF PAPER.

SUBSTANTIAL FINES

WELLINGTON, November 12.

A traveller named John M. Laing appeared in tho Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr W. G. Riddell, SAL, on a private prosecution. Ho was charged with (1), committing theft, on or about August 13, of a halo of printing paper, valued at £2 3s, tho property of Gordon and Gotch, wholesale stationers; and (2), committing theft, on or about October 1, of another bale of paper, valued at £3 10s 6d, also belonging to Gordon and Gotch. Mr C. Weston appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Hcrdman for the defendant, who pleaded guilty. Mr Weston informed the Court that tho defendant was a.n employee of the linn of Messrs Gordon and Gotch. There had been a long series .of thefts of paper, he alleged, extending over a period of about three years, and running info £6O or £7O. The informants, if they desired, could have made other allegations against the defendant, but it was difficult in a large firm to trace all the. thefts. It was only when stocking that the losses were discovered . A fine of £lO was imposed for each offence, with costs (60s). Defendant was allowed twenty-four hours to pay.
