EAST COAST ITEMS.

[Special to the Stab.] GISBORXE, Jnly 22. News was received from Tokomaru yesterday that the stranded schooner Kaeo had been shifted seaward about 10ft, and if decent tides prevail it is expected to get her off very soon. Septic metritis in cows has made its appearance in this district again this season, much earlier than last year. Tre disease, which was only brought i nder notice a couple of years ago by Mr S. Burton, Government Veterinary Surgeon was responsible for the death of about fifty or sixty cows in the district last years. Interviewed, Mt Burton stated that many local farmers had realised the seriouenece of the ailment, and had 1- eelv followed the preventative action rcommended, with gratifying results. This year, however, it has appeared fvntheT afield, due, he considered, to atmospheric conditions.

A meeting of the directors of the Gisborne Oil Company was held yesterday. The weekly reports of the manager (Mr M'Donald) were considered, and showed that the lOin bore was down 365 ft, and that at 350 ft a very strong vein of gas was struck. The ground recently parsed through has been very difficult for ooring operations, and the directors approved of the chairman's action in ordering i further 100 ft of lOin casing, in order, if possible, to get through the difficult ground before altering the size of the bore. The direct ore regretted to learn that the Government had withdrawn the geological survey party that had been working in the district, and the chairnv.tn's action when at Wellington in interviewing the Acting Prime Minister on the subject was approved. It was decided to communicate with the Hon. Mr Carroll asking to have the party reinstated.
