RAILWAY THIEVES IN RUSSIA.
A veritable army, splendidly organised, of railway thieves has been* discovered. Two leaders, who are engineers, and 150 subalterns have been arrested, and 250 more are still "wanted" by the police. Their own special "intelligence department" informed them when and whither consignments of valuable goods were bein" carried. Then their agents speedily ap° propnated the merchandise, which was duly taken to one of the enormous repositories belonging to the band. Among the influential agents were elegantly dressed females. The thieves had a special telegraphic code, and employed a number of motor bicycles. During three years' operations these enterprising people spirited away goods valued at twenty-five million roubles (£2,500,000). For years complaints hav« been made by the public that, instead of various consignments of value, thev received earth, logs, and stones.—St Petersburg correspondent ' Daily Telegraph '
