MELBOURNE, July 21. (Received July 21, at 11.15 a.m.) In the Honfo of Representatives Mr BatcheW, as a matter of urgency, called attention To the oll'cct on the Australian wine trade of the tariff* of South Africa. and New Zealand. He urged that, stops should l>o tal4en to place the Commonwealth, on an equal footing with South Africa in i«gand to imports into New Zealand. Mr Deakin. in reply, raid he had no doubt whatever tliat but for Mr ?"ddon's untiinc'ly desiih the reciprocity treaty would have Im?cii ratified by the NewZealand Govarnmcjit. Whenever a single matter was brought up, the New Zealand .authorities stated that the time was not ripe for such a change. The Federal Government would make every effort to reopen tho question.
