GREEN ISLAND COUNCIL

The above Council met on Wednesday for the purpose of installing the mayor, Mr W. Gcddes, who has been re-elected. Or Jenkins presided, and passed some very flattering encomiums on the mayorelect and the retiring councillors (Messrs Highet and Kane), and concluded with a sincere wish for a prosperous and,successful term for the new mayor. The Mayor, on taking the chair, welcomed the new councillors, and congratulated the old councillors who were returned to the Council. He hoped that they would work in harmony during the year, and that prosperity would •attend their work, and also that with the enlarged borough the Council would see their way clear to go in for improvements, such as Lighting, water, drainage, sanitary service, etc. At any rate, he hoped that at the end of the year there would be something to show for the year’s work. Several of the councillors" congratulated the mayor on his re-election, and expressed themselves as agreeable to the progressive policy which he had outlined. The monthly meeting was afterwards held, when committees were appointed as follow : —Works Committee—Crs Reeve. J. Geddes, Price, and Love; Finance Committee—Crs Miller and ' Watters ; Cemetery Committee—Crs Crimp, Wilson’, and Harm way; Drainage Committee—Crs Dr Will, J. Geddes, and Aitcheson; Lighting Committee—Crs Dr Will, Jenkins, Wilson, and ' Aitcheson : Extension Commitee—Crs Miller, Watters, and the mayor, and Mr Park.

I*. and W. Wright and several ratepayers wrote re the bad state of the road from Burnside station to the cement works, and it was resolved, after discussion, that the Works Committee inspect, report- at next meeting. Kempthorne, Prosser, and’ Co. wrote re County Council levying a heavv tax on the short piece of road between the Green Island and City Council boundaries. —lt was resolved that steps be taken to have the boundary altered to take in the portion of road referred to.

The Taieri County Clerk wrote re sharing cost of a test case re pollution of the Kaikorai .Stream outside the boroimh boundary.—Resolved to decline sharing expenses. a

The Clerk reported that there was a debit balance of £4O.
