INTERUNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT.

[From Oue Special Correspondent.J

Some exciting; play was witnessed in the finals- of the Men's Doubles and Combined Doubles of the tennis championships at the above tourney. These events wore got off on Wednesday afternoon on the Wellington Club's Courts. In the Doubles the Canterbury; pair (Jennings and Miss Grace) managed to put the Otago representatives (Gower and Miss Edwards) down, 6—4, 6—3. Every stroke was keenly contested, and the play throughout was fine, but the Men's Doubles produced some of the finest, if not the finest, play ever witnessed in these tournaments. In this section Gower and Bundle (Otago University) were opposed by Jennings and Wilding (Canterbury, College). The first set went after a desperate struggle to the Northern pair, 6—4. Otago won the first game of the next set, and then Canterbury, wiic seemed to have things all th;ir inn way, took the next five games, leaving the score s—l. But Otago were not dead yet, and, thanks to Gower's superb driving and volleying, the next six games and the set (7 —5) went to Otago. Now came the battle royal. Intense excitement reigned amongst the onlookers (who were fairly, numerous) as each side took game fop game, every stroke being hard fought for. Some fine rallies were here witnessed, one in particular in which thera were thirty odd strokes, and which Otago won. First one side took a game, and then another, till Canterbury took two in succession and won the set and the match, 11—9. Both of the Canterbury men played well, but I Gower exceeded himself and astonished I even his best supporters. The visiting teams were entertained the same day at tea by Mr Dixon Victoria College student), and left at night by the Maori, the Otago contingent arriving here by the first express yesterday.
