MINING.

River height this morning, 6ft 3in; weather cold. The Sandy Point dredge-master, '.vho reports having put in 128 hours for the week, expect* to have the face squared up by the end of the week. The ground is still poor. The New Trafalgar dredge-muster reports a fair run of 129 hours on the western section. The returns showed an improvement for that part of the face. The last three or four days the bottom has got level at about 38ft, and shows improved wash. Both No. 1 and No. 2 Electrics have made a start again. No. 1 started yesterday, and No. 2 commenced on a block of untouched ground at three o'clock en Wednesday afternoon. The master of the Lady Roxburgh dredge wired yesterday that he had resumed work the previous night, and that the paddock was fairly full of silt. The following mesage has been received from the manager of the Mount Rex tin mine (Avoea), under date April 3 : " Have made collar of shaft secure with logging and placed windlass over same. Shaft has been sunk sft; no change." The master of the Masterton dredge, writing under date April 11, reported a fair run for the past. week. There had been a slight improvement in the wash, but the improvement was principally on the coal and " maori" bottom. The red clay is -at present carrying no wash. The secretary of the" Nokomai Hydraulic Sluicing Company reports a satisfactorv week's work at all three claims. At No. 1 blowing off the top material was finished on the 12th inst,. and sluicing was to be commenced on the 15th. At No. 2 the fortnight's sluicing resulted in a Teturn of 450z, and after shifting the elevator sluicing was to be commenced on the 17th inst. At No. 3, owing to the deep ground, the paddock was taking longer to finish than was expected.

Mr David Zimnn, says the 'Grey Argus,' who is a director of the Consolidated Gold Fields Company, and who hns_ been visiting and inspecting the various properties of that powerful mining company from Blaokwater to Humphrey's Gully, appears inclined to stir things up a bit. His first step was a long report on the Inangahua properties from an optimistic point of view, for Mr Ziman is nothing if not hopeful. During his stay in Hokitika he visited the Rose <*old'fields under the guidance of Mr° H. Smythe, the company's engineer. As Mr Ziman is to pay another visit to the district, it is perhaps on the cards that he will see his way to do some business in the way of deep alluvial mining. The rise in the river last week enabled the Perseverance dredge, recently purchased by Lane Bros., to be dropped downstream to her new claim. Mr Duncan Livingstone, the party's capable master, had charge of the work, and the dredge was safely landed at the claim in a tew hours. The machine will dredge through the Eureka's tailings to enable her to enter the bottom of the claim, where, after erecting a larger elevator, dredging operations will be commenced. It will be remembered that the Golden Beach obtained some handsome returns averaging ICOoz weekly, when she started work at the foot of Dry Gully, and owin« to the silt pushing her ahead the bottom wis not properly cleaned np.-' Alexandra Herald.
