(Received March 10, at 9.35 a.m.) The Port Darwin mail brings details of the terrible conflagration among the flower boats on the Pearl River, near Canton, when nearly all the boats were consumed, causing the loss of 1,000 lives, the majority of whom were drowned. This disaster occurred on a Saturday night, when many parties wero being given by the mandarins. The wildest panic prevailed, and hundreds of people were seen jumping into the water to save themselves from the fire. Many were saved, but over 200 charred corpses were discovered up to Sundav afternoon.
The boats were heavily laden with humanity, and it is said that many mandarins are among the burned, while ten bankers and a number of prominent business men were among the victims. The fire is supposed to have originated through the falling of a kerosene lamp.
