She left again at 6 p.m. on Friday, the sth inst... experiencing strong northerly winds ami beam eeas till arrival at the Bluff at 8 p.m. on Monday, and sailed from the later port at 4 p.m. yesterday, arriving as above. During the run from the Bluff a concert was held in the social hall, a collection being made on behalf of the Penguin relief 'fund. The sum of £2 5s 9d was subscribed. Cabled advice has been received that the Federal-Houlder-Shh-e liner Nainshire sailed on Sunday from Liverpool for New Zealand via Australian ports. She will call at Auckland, Napier, Lyttelton, and Dunedin.

The work connected with the extensive alterations to the wharves at Napier will preclude passenger and cargo steamers from berthing at that port for several months, commencing on and after next Monday. The steamers-ivill, therefore, work cargo by lightering, and passengers will be transferred by tender. The shipping companies concerned announce that on and after next Monday there will be an additional charge of about 5s per ton ligtherage on all cargo handled at Napier. The financial position of the Grevmonth ■Harbor Board caused considerable discnnsaon at a recent meeting, when several members objected to the new dredge Mawhera being put into commission straight away, as her working expenses are about £075 a month. Legal opinion is to be Bought as to whether the Boaa-d are compelled to take over.the dredge for the three months covering the builders' <n,arantee period. " A NOVEL RIG. There is at present in port at Sydney the American four-masted barque Olympic, which is said to be the onlv vessel of her rig afloat. She i« known in some Pacific ports as the " freak ship." Captain T H Evans is her commander, and he claims that his ve**el * ;v "true four-masted barque," and he id supported bv many other mariners. The Olympic has "yards—that is, she is square rigged—on only two « her four maste, being "fore and aft" tigged on the other two. A "barque" has yards on but two of her three masts., whilst what is ordinarily called a " fourmastcd barque" is square rigged on three or her four masts. Captain Evans says his vessel shows a very fine turn of speed under her novel rig. Her last voyage was from Puget Sound, on the American'coasfc to Sydney, and as the five-masted schooner Inca and the four-masted b&rtruenfcine .lames Tuft were both ready to sail about the same time for Newcastle, the newspapers on the Sound worked up a good deal of interest in a race across the Pacific between these three vessels of entirely different n'gs. "Although we did not "agree to race," said Captain Evans, who, by the way, is popularly known on the American side as " Daddy," « w»«tacked it on. We did not eeey anything of each all the way across, but we must have been very dose all the way. At any rate, we arrived at Sydney first, only forty-eight honrs before the James Tuft reached Newcastle, and the Inca turned np twenty-four hours later. The Olympic is a vessel of 1.354tOS» JOV&UiI.
