Our Tirnaru correspondent wires: Mr E. R. Guinness, who its well known as the senior member of the firm of Guinness and Lo CreiT, Ltd., and from his connection with .the South Canterbury Jockey Club, of which lie is a vice-presi-dent, is at present dangerously ill. An operation was successfully performed, but Mr Guinness is still suffering from weakness and shock.
Mr B. E. Murphy, M.A., formerly of Dunedin, but now of the staff of Messrs Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers, solicitors, Wellington, was on Monday admitted by Mr Justice Denniston as a solicitor of the Supreme Court. Mr George Caldwell, a very old resident of Hampden, died suddenly last week, aged eight-two years. He arrived at Port Chalmers in 1863.
The Rev. H. S. Bishop, the new vicar of Mosgiel, with Outram and Allanton took up residence on Wednesday last. His last charge was at Broken Hill.. The staff of the New Zealand Insurance Company yesterday presented a gold watch chain to Mr Irani St. C. Downes, who after a long connection with the Dunedin branch is going to Auckland. The Fairfield Christian Endeavor Society held a farewell social to Mr J. Charters (who is going to Auckland) on Mondav night.
The Rev. W. J .Mayers (senior deputation secretary of Dr Barnardo's Homes), with Mrs Mayers, arrives in Dunedin this evening by the 7.5 express. The Momington Council last night passed a resolution expressing their appreciation of the manner in which Mr F. J. Williams, C.E., had carried out the waterworks scheme, which is practically completed by the extension along Elgin street. Mr J. B. Gould, lately in charge at Hanmcr, takes over the management of Warner's Hotel, Christchurch, to-morrow. Miss Crawford last night resigned her position as typist to the Mornington Council.
Messrs J. B. Reid and W. H. Quick have been reappointed to represent the Government on the Bank of New Zealand directorate.
The Dowager-Empress of Russia, sister of Queen Alexandra, has arrived in London.
Mi- _W. E. Cornwall, registrar of the Melbourne University, died suddenly at Rome, where he had gflie to marrv an American lady. Mr Walter Kirby, the Australian tenor, sang by command of Queen Margherita at Rome.
Prior to his departure for Dunedin, Mr J. W. Inglis was presented by the Gore staff of tho Bank of New South Wales with a travelling bag, as a mark of esteem. Mass Kearse, M.A. (of East Gore School), was appointed second assistant at the Gore High School. She gained a Board scholarship from tho Dunrobin School, and was at one time a teacher at St. Mary's Orphanage, Dunedin. Mr J. F. Arnold, M.P.. returned last evening from Wellington, where he has been attending the Methodist Conference. A complimentary social was tendered last night by tho congregation of the Glenroy Primitive Methodist Church to Mr James Chartcris, who is leaving for Auckland. The Rev. S. Bailey occupied the chair, and on behalf of the congregation presented Mr Charteris with a dressing case, bearing inscription. During the evening items were rendered by Misses Foggarty, Coombcs, Thompson. Morris, and Bethune, and by Messrs Berry, White, Taylor, and Sheen; also part songs were rendered by the choiT, conducted bv Mr T. Bauchop. Miss L. Coombs presided at the organ.
