LAWN TENNIS.

CLUB TO BE FORMED AT CAVERSHAM. A meeting was held in the Caversham Presbyterian Hall last- night to consider the desirability of forming a lawn tennis club in the district. A large number of residents were present, ladies predominating. Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., presided. He that the object of the meeting was to find out what support was. likelv to be accorded a movement for the formation of a lawn tennis club in the dMtrict. There was undoubtedly room for such a club. The want of a tennis club had been repeatedly expressed during the past few years. A similar movement was set going some time ago, and it had not been set aside altogether. Several ladies had spoken to him lately, and some of them had been successful in securing the provisional rights of a certain section suitable for a tennis court. The Bowling Clnh had prospered, and was now one of tho mest important institutions in Caversham. Lawn tennis" would not only be suitable for the. ladies, but young men could also take it up. From a health view, as well as a social point of view, it would be an acquisition to the district. The property mentioned was situated in David street, almost opposite the match factory. There was enough room for two courts. It could be secured for ten yeare at an annual rental. He had before him particulars of the latest, court laid in Dunedin. It had been more expensive than usual, the cost being £3O. Another club had put down two courts for £9O, and another one had cost £SO. About £l2O would probably be the cost of two courts. Before anything could bo done, however, the meeting would have to resolve whether they considered that the club should be formed. The next thing to do would be to appoint a pr-eliminaiy committee to go into the particulars, draw up rules, etc, and appoint an interim secretary. Mr J. Dempster moved, and Mtk Meekison seconded—"That it is desirable that a lawn tennis club should be formed in tho district." The motion was carried Tmanimously. Mr H. F. Titchener was appointed secretary pro tern., and the following Committee were elected:—ilisses M'DoiigaU. Hill, Sanders, and May Lewis, Mrs Mes-ki-soil, Messrs Belstead, R. Stevenson, and J. Dempster. Monday, the 15th inst., was fixed as a date for the next meeting, when the Committee's report, etc., will bo considered. A number of those present expressed their willingness to join the club.
