The weather affected the attendance largely, though the racing was good. Rain commenced to fall during the third race, and continued during the rest of'the day. The Champion Stakes is regarded as one of the best races ever run at Flemington. Mala easily accounted for the Select Stakes, for two-year-olds, 7f ; Karanaud won the Place Handicap, in 2min 38isec; and Maltine annexed the Farewell Handicap, lm, in lmin 43sec. The monthly competition for the St. .Andrew's Cross (gold and silver) took place on Balmacewen Links on Saturdav. Mr H. C. Smith, amateur champion of New Zealand (two points behind scratch) proved equal to the task set him, and won the gold cross, with a card showing six up on " Bogey." Mr Smith went out in 36 and came in in 37. The recognised record for the links is 78. decided on medal play. Mr C. VY. Birch, with four up, won the silver cross. MODEL YACHTING. Two races were sailed off on Lake Logan on Saturday afternoon by the Model \acht Club. The first was"a trophy presented to the club by Mr D. Paterson, and it resulted :—Mr E. Port- Chalmers.—J. Olengarrv (stroke. 11.10). A. Carey (No. 3. 11.4),' L. Atriold (\o. 2. 10.5). E. Xclson (bow, 10.10), Handle Smith (cox, 5.7). The race did not s-'Unt until after seven, (11-engany (Port) won the toss, and chose the inside. Mr J. K. Uulbruith both bouts away with a capital start. The Port crew Gradually forced ahead, and led for the first half-imlo. M'Crath then made an ell'oit, and gradually drew up and pa.s. k ed (ll.ngany, and maintained the lead to the tinit-'h, winning by a <'oupie of lengths. Mr S. S. Myers (vice-president of the Otago Rowing Club) acted as judge. On Saturday afternoon the Otago Rowing Club got off the Thomson Fouls, which. rcMilted in a victory for Stevens bv two lengths from Paterson, Sibbald being third.
