In the course of the preparations that were being made to admit the water to the almost finished Victoria in the dock at' Birkenhead a high wind and a high tide broke the piles of timber forming a dam. The inrush of water caught nineteen men who were working in the dock, and swept away the platform and a huge crane, which collapsed npon the workmen, pinning them. Five of them had miraculous escapes. , A NARROW ESCAPE. LONDON, March 7. (Received March 8, at 8.50 a.m.) The rush of water at Birkenhead threatened the barrier of the great dock,' but the barrier withstood the pressure, otherwise several vessels would have been overwhelmed.
