Johnny had played truant, for which offence his mother cut off the usual evening meal. As he w»e TOiuvhing off to bed he called from the passage: "I am going to die, mother; and when I am dead 1 want the doctor to cut me open and look at my stomach." Of course the maternal heart was filled with dim forebodings, and Johnnie was asked what his threat meant. "I wish it to be known," was his replv, "that I died at your hands of starvation/' Needless to 6ay Johnnie did not go to-bed that night suppeileas.
